By the numbers, part 2

20%—-That’s all! This low percentage should be concerning for any student, parent, educational institution, and employer. Educational costs and onboarding costs are both at all-time highs and young adults are entering the workplace feeling unprepared. You will find that I am always in support of learning, but if we are asking young adults to take out staggering loans for their future, we should make sure these institutions should be reviewing how they prepare people for the workplace. At the same time, if employers are looking for certain qualities that are not typically taught in a certificate or degree program, these qualities should be one of the first items taught during the onboarding phase. Either way, turnover is costly and we can find ways to lower those rates by offering solid training even if it is offered apart from the degree or onboarding plan.

If you are one of the 80%, what can you be doing to help prepare yourself for your future job? How about a mentor in the line of work you want to do? Don’t have time to read, there are tons of audiobooks on professional development. Sign up for a local library card and download Hoopla to start self-learning with free audiobooks.

We at Focalise want to help you (whether you are a student, educational institution, or employer) in teaching the skills young adults feel they are missing when they start their careers. Why did you feel unprepared when you started your career?
